The Poetry & Poetics of the 1980s – Conference Tips

Thanks to everyone who submitted a paper and/or panel proposal for the upcoming NPF Conference on the Poetry and Poetics of the 1980s. We look forward to welcoming all of you to Orono this summer. Below you’ll find some tips designed to make your travel and stay agreeable. If you have questions about any aspect of your journey, feel free to be in touch by e-mail to NPF_Paideuma at umit dot maine dot edu or by phone at 207-581-3813.

REGISTERING FOR THE CONFERENCE

We encourage conference participants to register early using our on-line registration form. Registration rates are $150 (regular), $100 (reduced for graduate students, independent scholars, and international scholars without institutional support). Using the same form, you can reserve on-campus housing and make a selection for your banquet meal preference. Conference participants can make use of the nearby recreation center (with lap pool) for a nominal fee of $3 per day.

GETTING TO THE CONFERENCE

The University of Maine is in Orono, Maine, about three hours north of the state’s border with Massachussetts and just fifteen minutes from Bangor.

The NPF is pleased to recommend experienced local travel agent Dawna Gallant, of Milne Travel, to those conference participants who would like assistance in planning their travel to the Bangor area. Dawna, who has ably handled our New Writing Series travel arrangements for several years now, can be reached at 866-675-5655 (press 7, then ext 8027).

The airport nearest to Orono is Bangor International Airport (BGR), which is served by Delta and US Airways. Travel time between Bangor Airport and the UMaine campus is just about 15 minutes ($25 cab fare).

The Portland Jetport is a little more than two hours south of Orono and is served by JetBlue, among other carriers. Fares into Portland tend to be considerably less costly than into Bangor.

Concord Trailways runs multiple buses between Bangor and Portland each day and tends to be both quicker and more comfortable than Greyhound.

Boston’s Logan Airport is about five hours south of Bangor and is served by Concord Trailways. Manchester Airport, in New Hampshire, is about the same distance.

Unfortunately, Maine is only served by Amtrak as far north as Portland.

OPTIONS FOR OFF-CAMPUS ACCOMMODATIONS

The NPF recommends the University Inn to Conference participants who are looking for a convenient alternative to on-campus accommodations.
